| Panama is unique in its position as a transcontinental country, connecting both North and South America. Located conveniently between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, it is the second most industrialized country in Central America. Panama has a rich Pre-Colombian heritage and is known to have been amongst the first pottery making villages in the Americas such as the Monagrillo culture dating to about 2500-1700 BC.
The countrys early native Cuevas and Cocole tribes quickly disappeared after the Spanish brought weapons and disease in the early 16th century. Consequentially Panama was ruled by the Spanish Empire for over 300 years. The Panama Canal?s rich history talks of 22,000 workers loosing their lives due to yellow fever during its conception. Panama declared independence in 1903 and has since become a modern country that holds its own amongst all nations.
